SLTA's Rs. 1.5m Lafarge sponsorship

The Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) has cemented a three-year sponsorship package worth Rs. 1.5 million over the next three years with Lafarge Mahaweli Cement (Pvt.) Limited for the 89th National Championships which is to be staged at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath from August 9 to 15.

The Junior Championships starts tomorrow (Monday) and concludes on August 8. The total prize money on offer is Rs. 175,000/-

Lafarge will pump in Rs. 500,000 per year upto 2006, with a part of the package being diverted to the SLTA's Development Fund.

Franklyn Emmanuel, who at 14 years was the youngest to win the Men's Open singles title in 2002, will be defending the title which he won last year too and will be attempting to make it a hat-trick. He is in good form and even fared well in the ITF Junior Tour of Europe recently.

However, this youngster will face quite a strong challenge from Amrith Rupasinghe and Harshana Godamanne, and the SLTA, hopes that there will be some positive response from India, Singapore and Malaysia in sending their players for the nationals. (L.G.)
