Nepali govt. to form peace secretariat for talks with insurgents KATHMANDU, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) The anti-government guerrillas are forcing over 4,000 youths including school students into militia training in an undisclosed location in west Nepal, The Kathmandu Post newspaper reported Saturday. The youths and students of above grade six were forcibly taken away from Jogbudha and surrounding area in Dadeldhura district, some 750 km west of Kathmandu, the independent English-language daily quoted a girl who escaped from the guerrillas' captivity as saying. The guerrillas are training the youths to handle weapons, plant landmines and manufacture socket bombs, the girl said on condition of anonymity. The guerrillas picked the students who were home on summer vacation, she added. The anti-government guerrillas have intensified their violent activities across Nepal in recent days. Nearly 10,000 Nepalese people have lost their lives since the anti-government insurgency broke out in the Himalayan kingdom in early 1996. |
