Bata on foot again in two weeks Bata Shoe Company of Ceylon Ltd (BSCCL) will not move or relocate its manufacturing plant to any country despite disputes and turmoils in the company, said its Managing Director Kym Bradley. "We want to keep this company in Sri Lanka to do our business here," Bradley said at a media conference to defend its position against the prolonged trade union action at their premises, which began in June 22 following the dismissal of one of its employees. At present the company has incurred a massive loss of Rs.120 million in terms of turnover, with trade union action along with the burnt down of one of its rented warehouse at Ratmalana. "We have made every endeavour to settle this dispute on a reasonable basis. The proposal made by the Commissioner of Labour to settle this dispute was accepted by us,but the Union refused to accept it",Bradley said. He said that in order to resolve this problem, they even improved on the terms proposed by the Commissioner of Labour but once again the Union refused it. It has come to the attention of the management that many of the previous offers of compromise already placed in front of the union has not been passed on to its member and that the union representatives have also distorted to bring an end to this dispute, Managing Director said. He said that with the object of amicably resolving the dispute, the company has offered a further package which would cost the company further Rs.10 million over the compensation package already offered to 146 employees. The only request the company has made to the Union is that the warehouses at the factory premises in Ratmalana and at Katubedde be unblocked to permit transport of goods. "We enjoyed a 28 per cent market share, but were able to sustain in the business with the smooth function of supply of its products through the sister companies in overseas", Marketing Manager Ifthiqar Sameem said. He said that they had entered their premises with the police protection and assured to resume its operations in two weeks. Sameem said that the destruction of the warehouse will not affect the company as their main warehouse is intact. BSCCL a multinational company operating in Sri Lanka more than over 53 years. |
