The new FACE in town : A global fraternity for people of European descent by Elmo Leonard A group called The Global Fraternity of Coloured Journalists, Writers, Poets and Artists of European Descent - FACE Sri Lanka was formed recently with copywriters and artists enjoying equal status. FACE intends forging links with other coloured journalists, writers and artists of European descent, worldwide. Noel Jansz (Australia) Dexter Nocolle (USA) and President of the Burgher Association, Maxi Rozario attended the inaugural meeting in Colombo, while a member left for UK taking the message with her. FACE is a secular, non-racial and non-political group and persons of mixed race and other races, who work towards the objectives of the group can join. For five to six hundred years following the spreading out of the European race, this category of people have been subject to diverse cultural, social, economic and other influences. The newly formed group wishes to explore deep into the history of persons of European descent and learn more about their forbearers, why and in what conditions they came to the East and West. Already some such work has been undertaken here and in other parts of the world. FACE is yet in the process of expanding their membership locally, and will later visit their brethren living in Batticaloa (Batticaloa Burghers) Trincomalee, Wahakotte, Jaffna etc and make their presence known. Some of the objectives of FACE are to make amends for the deeds of their ancestors in their quest to conquer indigenous people and prove that the pen, camera and paint brush are far mightier than the cannon and gun they employed, to preserve their identities and cultures; to create a worldwide fraternity of coloured people of European descent; to identify a common horizon for coloured people of European descent living worldwide and to use the principles of marketing to achieve their social objectives. The office bearers are: Patron-Manique Mendis (a Sinhalese) President - J B Muller, V President - Maureen Seneviratne, Secretary - Elmo Leonard, Assist Sec - Keith Noyahr, Treasurer - Patrick de Silva, Committee members - Jeremy Muller, Weilham Milhuisen, Rosemary Joachim, Rozanne Anderson, Rebecca Fleming and Steve A Morrell. The next meeting will be held on Sunday, August 29 at 4.00 p.m. Address for correspondence: 150/8 Edirisinghe Road, Nugegoda. Tel: 0773051009, 2596885. |
