The spotlight falls on pianists

Belonging to an era when pop music was in the middle of the road stream, Luke Henricus was a familiar figure with many pop bands playing at night spots, dances and variety shows. A singer too, his love for piano is reflected in his sensitive expression of melodies that range from the early standards and evergreens to present day pop ballads and top of the chart hits.

Luke is one of the four pianists who will be in the spotlight when the Grand Oriental Hotel presents its musical extravaganza on Friday August 27 at the Bishops College Auditorium. You can enjoy Luke's artistry on Tuesdays when he plays at the lobby of the Hotel from 10.30 a.m. - 12.30 p.m. and then in a relaxed atmosphere you can relish your dinner and take in the music of Luke at the Harbour Room on Tuesdays from 7.00 p.m. - 11.00 p.m.

Luke Henricus who enjoys playing and singing the swing rhythm songs of yesteryear written by the famous composers like Gershwin, Cole Porter and also popular show tunes is happy that he is a musician and given a chance to live his life all over again he'd choose to be a musician - like all musicians say. Catch his performances at the GOH weekly.

Looking forward to perform at the concert staged by the Grand Oriental Hotel on Friday August 27 at The Bishop's College Auditorium is pianist Shane Blok relatively young and new in the music scene when you compare him to other pianists Nihal Corea, Tamara Ruberu and Luke Henricus, who will be featured.

One time a Flight Steward with AirLanka and an old boy of St. Peter's College Colombo, and St. Benedict's College, Shane enjoyed music, especially playing the piano as a hobby. Soon when his repertoire widened which included, as he tells us, semi-classical music, standards, evergreens, ballads and contemporary pops, he ventured on to becoming a professional.

At the Grand Oriental Hotel you can enjoy his performances at dinner time from 7 p.m. onwards at the Harbour Room on Mondays and Thursdays. Besides his hotel work he performs at weddings and corporate functions. By profession Shane dabbles in Business Management Administration and Marketing. He is now studying Astronomy and Cosmology and is a student of the Buddhist and Pali University.
