Don Sherman : The Singing Chef Don Sherman, a familiar figure on Rupavahini, is perhaps Sri Lanka's only singing chef. A new generation musician/cook, he fuses the taste and sounds of the east and the west in both his cooking and his singing, dishing out melodious fare that's uniquely entertaining. A self proclaimed rap artiste, Sherman, recently released his debut album titled 'Mang Handai' with 16 original songs, 15 of them in Sinhala. And he will be following this up with an unusual musical cookery demonstration/workshop at the Namal Malani Punch Theater, in Borella, today. Sherman, who promises that the demonstration/workshop will be a novel experience for both food and music lovers, says that he plans to create a new culinary culture with his style of musically orientated easy cooking. A former student of Maris Stella College, Negombo, Sherman, who was always musically inclines studied music as a subject in school and formed his own band named 'Zero -5' with his class mates. Later he joined the 'Galaxies' and remained with them for six years. Parallel with his music, Sherman nurtured his interest in cooking and studied professional cookery at Swiss Asia School of Hotel Management and Tourism and at the Ceylon Hotel School. He worked at Hotel Lanka Oberoi and the Sri Lankan Catering Service before joining Keels Food as a Demonstration Chef. Sherman concocts some easy recipes for the Observer Magazine this week. Try it out with the radio full blast. |
