'Rugby makes men out of boys' by Ranjan Anandappa "Playing rugger makes you courageous and gives you all the attributes to be a good administrator as it makes men out of boys," said Hemaka Amarasuriya, Chairman of Singer Sri Lanka at the awards ceremony of the Singer Schools' League Rugby Championships at the Navarangahala last Wednesday. "I am happy with the progress of schools rugby as it has spread across the island. Earlier, the game was confined only to Colombo, and the Sri Lanka Schools' Rugby Association has done a remarkable job in popularising the game", he said. As to schools rugby reach fans courtesy the television, Amarasuriya said, "Discipline in a contact game has been quite remarkable upto a certain extent and the live television coverage will no doubt add more glamour to the tournament." It took ten long years to obtain permission for the TV coverage for school matches. The school rugby authorities were reluctant to grant permission fearing that it would drive away the spectators from the grounds, but it has gone the other way about." Kingswood College, Kandy won the League Championships while Royal College, Colombo were the runners-up. Asitha Abeysekera, Director Marketing, Singer, Sanjay Karunaratne, Merchandising Manager, Singer, Ranjith Chandrasekera, President, Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Association and Mohan Balasuriya, President, SLRFU were also present. |
