Four return air tickets to go with Grand Classic Four return air tickets to London and Singapore are on offer this year at the 4th Grand Hotel Grand Classic Premier Golf Championships to be staged on September 3, 4 and 5 at the Nuwara-Eliya Golf Course organised by the Grand Hotel and Nuwara-Eliya Golf Club. This is being sponsored by SriLankan Airlines and co-sponsored by Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, Commercial Bank, Hatton National Bank, Carlsberg, Tagheuer Watches and Black Label Scotch Whisky. The Deputy Chairman of Mercantile Investments, Gerard Ondanjee, said that the main objective of conducting this tournament was to promote Nuwara-Eliya as a destination more than the Grand Hotel and the NEGC. He thanked all the sponsors for coming forward with very generous packages and said that when this event started four years back, the organisers had to advertise the event, but now there are people who contact them to find out when the tournament is. The President of the NEGC, "NUG" Silva said that this tournament is well organised right from the inaugural year and there is good entertainment as well for every person. He also said that he was grateful to the sponsors, and disclosed that about 150 golfers were expected to enter this year. There were 137 entries last year. The men's events will be worked off in two divisions - Division 'A' (Handicap 0 to 16) and Division 'B' (Handicap 17 to 28). The winners of each division will receive return air tickets to London. The Ladies will have only one division with the winner and runner-up receiving return air tickets to Singapore. The tournament will be on a stableford format. There will also be events for both boys and girls (under-17) with handicaps 15 to 28, while a novices event (under-16) too is on the card in a 6-hole stroke-play format with attractive prizes for putting and chipping etc. In the men's division there are prizes for the longest drive, closest to the pin, oldest competitor etc. The organisers have also organised a series of other events to coincide with the Grand Hotel-Grand Classic Golf Championships. There will be a welcome party at the Super Club of the Grand Hotel, barbecue lunch with jazz afternoon at the NEGC with the prize distribution and dinner dance at the Ballroom of Grand Hotel on the final night. Others present at the media briefing on Wednesday night at Continental Hotel were Harin Costa, General Manager of Grand Hotel and Rathvan de Livera Vice-Captain of the NEGC. (L.G.) |
