Time for national agenda - Bogollagama by Deepal Warnakulasuriya Former Industries Minister Rohitha Bogollagama in an exclusive interview with the Sunday Observer said that the UNP as the main opposition party should assist the government's development programs and efforts of resuming talks with the LTTE. He stressed that the country should have a national agenda before the individual party agendas and also added the statement should come from the party leader more than an MP like him. He explained that a national agenda which can be accepted by all the political parties definitely will address the ethnic problem. "First of all, the political leadership should realise the fact," he added. He also said that agendas on democracy, economy and social issues which come under a possible National Agenda would lead the country to peace and prosperity. Kurunegala district MP Bogollagama stressed the timely need of identifying the priorities in politics. "We have entered the 21st century, but the country has not gone forward, but backwards. The reason is we do not have a national agenda," he added. Commenting on the April general elections, he admitted that the party did not do much on rural water, irrigation, agrarian services etc which the rural masses expected from them. The MP also appreciated the renovation of 10,000 tanks by the Alliance Government and said that it was much needed for the country. Questioned for his comments on the government's progress within four months, he said that 120 days were too a short-period and not enough to pass any judgment. |
