Lull in East by Rashomi Silva Troubled East marked a significant lull last week with a remarkable drop in rebel activities in the areas, the LTTE and Karuna loyalists have apparently restricted their cadre transportation, political activities and movements in both the government and rebel held territories after the killing of two senior cadres, Bava and Yoga. The cadres who were the Deputy Political head and the Divisional Rehabilitation and Administrative chief of the LTTE, were among the senior most LTTE cadres to serve in the East. Episodes of troubles and lull seem to follow one another and the cycle would continue, an Army sources predicted. "We can not except the LTTE would let Karuna cadres get away after killing two of their senior men but the killing appeared to be a blow to the LTTE, as they have limited most of their activities" he said. Yet the sources said the LTTE has renewed efforts at recruitment in certain parts of Batticaloa and Valachchenai, instances of forcible recruitment of children and young adults were often reported, sources said. Apparently with no serious skirmishes during past two years and the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the country, and most of all the internal struggles within the LTTE, had changed the attitude of the people making it difficult for the LTTE to find manpower, sources said. |
