Anura Rohana excels at Tianjin TEDA by Lal Gunasekera Sri Lanka's professional golfer, R. A. Anura Rohana fared exceptionally well at the US dollars 200,000 Tianjin TEDA open of the Asian Professional Golf Association (APGA) tour in China last week. About 130 professionals competed. Rohana who returned to the island just a few days ago, with a total of 274 (66, 70, 68, 70) and missed a hole-in-one by a mere half inch at the 12th which carried the prize of a car worth Rs 30 million. Thailand's Thammanoon Srirot led from start to finish to carry away US dollars 32,300 to repeat his success at the Tianjin TEDA Open in 1999. He had a winning total of 19-under par 265 (64, 67, 69, 65). Another player from Thailand, Boonchu Ruangkit, was second on 266 (69, 69, 64, 64), followed by Chinese Taipei's Lu Wei. Chih 269 (69, 71, 68, 61), Chen Yuan-Chi also from Taipei on 271 (67, 68, 71, 65), Simon Yates of Scotland 272 (65, 73, 66, 68), Charlie Wi of South Korea also on 272 (67, 66, 68, 71), Alistair Presnell of Australia 273 (69, 67, 71, 66) and Korea's Chun Joon also on 273 (64, 68, 71, 70). Rohana it will be recalled came right on top out of 79 golfers in the final round at "Q" School in Poona, India in June and qualified to play on the Indian Professional Golf Association (IPGA) Tour, which includes 22 tournaments between August and April next year (2005) in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Rohana in his first year as a professional last year (2003), finished 96th out of over 300 pros on the APGA Tour. |
