French nationals walk away with titles at Greenpath

Two French nationals Vincent Liegard, 29-year-old school teacher and 19-year-old undergraduate Udanthi Narahenpitage who has Sri Lankan parentage, on vacation in the island carried away the Men's and Women's Open singles titles respectively at the 89th National Championship of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath last week which was sponsored by Lagarge.

Liegard beat the bottom seeded Harshana Godamanne in a four setter (6-0, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3) to win the Men's Singles title to carry away the Rs. 25,000 prize money, while Udanthi beat Shalini de Silva (nee Perera) in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) for the Women's Open Singles title and with it Rs. 20,000.

Thiyumi Abeysinghe and Ekanayake won the Women's Doubles title beating Chaya Beling and Shalini de Silva (6-2, 7-6), while veterans Rohan de Silva and Jayendra Wijeyesekera won the Men's Doubles title beating Rajiv Rajapakse and Renouk Wijemanne in a three setter (6-4, 6-7, 6-2). The Mixed Doubles was won by Harshana Godamanne and Shalini de Silva over Rajiv Rajapakse and Thiyumi Abeysinghe in straight sets (6-3, 6-1).

Aendra Bandaranayake won the Men's Over-35 Singles with a close 7-5, 7-6 win over Yagama, while the Men's Over-35 Doubles went to C. de Silva and Perera who beat Aruna Seneviratne and Subramaniam in a three setter (6-4, 4-6, 7-6).

However, Ravi Subramaniam won the Men's Over-45 Singles with a straight sets (6-0, 6-2) win over Gunanath, while later combining with Senadhira won the Men's Over-45 Doubles beating ASP Sunderalingam and Mohamed who gave a walk-over.

The Men's Over-55 Singles was won by Mendis over Sunderalingam in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) while Mohamed and Sunderalingam took the Men's Over-55 Doubles beating Fernando and Rasiah also in straight sets (6-2, 6-3).

Kathirgamar beat Perera 7-5, 6-3 to win the Men's Over-65 Singles, while Kulatunga and Perera won the Men's Over-65 Doubles beating Kathirgamar and Subramaniam in straight sets (6-2, 6-4).

Chan wins Jembo title

Chinese Taipei's Yung Jan Chan who had to qualify for a slot in the main draw of the Singles at the US Dollars 10,000 Jembo women's Professional Tennis Championship, went on to win the title beating Thailand's bottom seeded Montinee Tangphong in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).

India's Rushmi Chakrawarthi and Jayaram Sai Jayalakshmi combined effectively to win the Doubles title in a three setter (6-3, 5-7, 6-3) over Taipei's Yung-Jan Chan and Thailand 's Montinee Tangphong.

This tournament drew a host of overseas entries with India entering as much as 15 in the main draw, followed by Thailand (7) and Chinese Taipei (3) too apart from three from Sri Lanka.
