Prabha the swimming sensation, yet another superb feat

The 14-year-old Prabha Madhavi Dharmadasa, the swimming sensation representing Western Province gave yet another superb performance to establish three new meet records at the swimming champions of the XXX National Sports Festival conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports concluded last Sunday at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool.

Prabha, the Asian International School star who is now a household name in the sport had come right to the top now with the superb performances from January to August this year.

She accounted for three new records on Sunday in the 100 metres breast stroke-1.24.69 secs, 200 metres breast stroke-3.03.06 secs and 4x50 metres individual medley-2.43.84 secs.

For Dharmadasa it is a unique feat to set 16 new records in the five major meets she has already participated, She has won all events at the Sri Lanka School Swimming Championships including three new records. Short course National Championships won 5 events and set records in 4 events. Pentathlon championships won 5 events setting two new marks.

Age group swimming championships had 5 wins and broke 4 records and at the National Age Group Swimming Championships won all three events establishing records in all three. Furthermore Dharmadasa also swam at the Sri Lanka schools and Tamil Nadu dual age group swimming meet and won all three events in her age category.

Furthermore she proved her class to become champion in her age category in all six meets she has taken part upto date.

The swimming prodigy Dharmadasa at the recent age group swimming championships improved on 19-year-old record of another fine swimmer of the past Deepika Chanmugam. Deepika created her record in 1985 five years before Prabha was born.

Prabha blessed with a great start set the pool ablaze as she powered her way to post her name into the record sheet finishing 1.23.13 secs (in the 100 metres breast stroke girls under-14) against the 19-year-old existing mark of 1.24-61 secs of Deepika. After she touched first clipping off Chanmugam's mark by 1.48 secs received a tremendous ovation from the spectators.

Dharmadasa is raring to go at the Junior National Swimming Championships to be held from September 9 to 11 at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool. She is expected to create more and more records and make the new meet records tally to grow higher and higher.
