Nepal's Maoists end industrial strike against big companies KATHMANDU, Saturday (AFP) A pro-Maoist trade union said Friday it was ending an industrial strike against 24 companies it claimed had been exploiting workers but said it would continue to target US-backed firms. "We have withdrawn the strike called from August 17 as part of our struggle against the exploitation of the labourers," Salikram Jamarkatel, chairman of the All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF), said in a statement here. The Maoists had accused the blacklisted companies of exploiting their workers and had listed 11 demands including the release of jailed rebels and compensation for guerrillas killed in the civil war, which has claimed nearly 10,000 lives since 1996. Most of the 24 firms threatened by the Maoists, who are waging a bloody insurgency to overthrow the monarchy, have connections with the royal family or multinationals. "It is not the policy of the ANTUF to displace all the multinational companies from Nepal immediately," Jamarkatel said. "(But) we have decided to close down all the multinational companies in Nepal with US investment forever because the US has been providing arms and military training to Nepal to suppress the Nepali people's liberation movement," the statement said. The United States has called for international support to defeat the Maoists, who are strongly anti-American. |
