Akash - lovers of classical rock

Just two months old and Akash a classical rock group are happy no end that they are semi-finalists in the TNL On Stage competition. Heavily influenced by the sounds of Deep Purple, Grand Funk Railroad, Led Zeppelin and Roxy to name a few Akash comprises eager music freaks who unlike other young rock fans are keen on expressing themselves through a classic rock medium. That's not all. The five guys are currently, besides rehearsing their repertoire, also involved in laying down tracks for an album of rock in a Sri Lankan oriental mix style.

You might be curious to know who these enthusiastic young guys are. They are new to the scene and some of them are sons of leading musicians well-known in the industry. Take Lanthra Perera the lead guitarist and vocalist. He's just fifteen years old and has been raring to go according to his father Nimal Perera one time versatile bassist of The Gypsies. Hailing from a musical family is Sarani Perera whose father is the acknowledged violinist Kalani Perera. Sarani plays rhythm guitar and is quite familiar with the classic rock sounds of yesteryear. On keyboards is young and talented Samindu Gunasekera whose first outing this is. So too the bassist Yasiru Sudasinghe.

Giving that exciting thrust to Akash is the drummer Pabalu Wijegoonewardena who besides playing the acoustic drums, uses Sri Lankan drums in the performances.

The groups success at TNL on Stage could be attributed to their Manager the renowned bassist Tilak Dias, synonymous with rock in Sri Lanka. According to him the boys are extremely talented and have been having regular rehearsals at Rock Company's Studio and he hopes that Deep Purple's rock rhythms will spell success for Akash.
