Right decisions at right time important today

BY L.S.A. Wedaarachchi

"In the globalized business environment today, it is expected to take the right decisions at the right time.

If there is a delay in taking a decision that can affect the business, wrong decisions as well as wrong investments can be taken due to lack of information," Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of the Prodist Group in the Netherlands Auke Van der Meulen said, delivering a special lecture at INGRIN auditorium in Colombo recently.

The subject of his speech was "Why Management Information Systems (MIS) is so important for business of present times".

Auke Van der Meulen was in Sri Lanka last week as an invited resource person by INGRIN Institute of Printing and Graphics, Colombo - an institution under the ministry of skills development, vocational and technical education and INGRIN Foundation in the Netherlands.

Describing the meaning of management information, Van der Meulen said that management information is the information needed by managers and executives of the organizations to achieve organizational vision and mission.

"Basically, management information is all information that supports making decisions at all levels of management.

Three levels of management information are distinguished', he said.

Management information for operational planning, decision-making and control, management information for tactical planning and decision-making, management information for strategic and policy planning are the three levels of management information."

"All three levels of management information are fed by the same input data, the great difference being the way this information is represented.

All information collected within the company is stored in a database.

The three levels of informational needs are each fed by a number of locations," Van der Meules said.

'Operational planning will use overviews of order details and deadlines production schedules and lists indicating the status of each of the jobs.

'A good MIS system will provide a lot of information to the organization to improve the productivity and work towards a better customer service level; Van Der Meulen said.

In Europe, the Netherlands is considered to be the most advanced country in MIS systems, especially in the printing and the media industry. Van der Meulen, co-founder and CEO of the Prodist Group in the Netherlands expects to introduce their advanced MIS systems to the Sri Lanka Printing and Media Industry, through the Ingrin Institute of Printing and Graphics, Colombo.

During his visit here Auke Van der Meulen had a series of discussions with local authorities including Governor of the Southern Province, representatives of Printing and Media industry chambers in Galle and Kandy and representatives of the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Colombo.
