First step to the future
According to sources at the Education Ministry, the highest number of admissions for Grade One will be from the Colombo district followed by Gampaha and Kurunegala respectively. The lowest number of annual Grade One admissions is from Northern Province districts like Mannar, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi. The Trincomalee district records a satisfactory number of admissions, around 8,000. Sources also said that over 200,000 students are for Sinhala Medium schools and around 85,000 for Tamil Medium. Around 500 students islandwide will be seeking admission to English Medium schools. The Galle district leads this list. Boys dominate the admission lists with 52 per cent of the total admissions, but girls are not far behind at 48 per cent. Although Sri Lanka has 9,790 schools, only 9,448 of them have Grade One classes. The deadline for Grade One admission applications was on June 30 and the interviews began in August. The preliminary list of selected pupils will be revealed first. The final list will be released after the appeals of unsuccessful candidates are considered. |
