Twelve-year-old Shannon Patterson says he takes sandwiches and hot dogs to school. However, he feels that this is not nutritious enough. "But I like it," he says. Aditya and Angelo, who are 12 years of age, say that they take sandwiches with cheese or ham to school. "I also take noodles and spaghetti. I don't like bread with jam and butter much, but what I take to school is very nourishing," says Aditya. Five-year-old Malithi and six-year-old Hirushi say they prefer to take biscuits and noodles to school. On kids' food habits, Niranjani Wickramasinghe, Nutritionist, Durdans Pvt. Hospitals says "Growing children must take a balanced diet, especially in the morning". She feels that most children these days are quite fond of 'junk food', which do not adequately supply the essential nutrients. Parents, on the other hand, should be more vigilant when they prepare their kids' food. "Especially the stuff they take to school. Some parents may give whatever the children like to eat out of love, but at the same time, they should be more concerned about the nutrients that go into their kids' meals," she says. Explaining further, the nutritionist says that sausage sandwiches provide calories and proteins, but biscuits alone will not be sufficient as they provide merely calories. "But noodles or rice with vegetables is definitely a balanced meal." Niranjani also says that cereals such as greengram or Cowpea with scraped coconut or rice with green leaves, dhal and sprats too would be ideal for breakfast. |
