Historic Anuradhapura

The first capital of our land, this ancient city is also known as the 'City of Legends'. Located 204 kilometres away from Colombo, it was founded in the Fourth Century BC by King Pandukabhaya.

Many important places of worship for Buddhists are found in this ancient city including the Sri Maha Bodhiya, Ruwanveli Seya, Thuparamaya, Abhayagiriya and Jetavanaramaya.Anuradhapura was the seat of many great rulers such as King Dutugemunu and King Devanampiyatissa who have left a legacy we can be proud of.
