Then came the block what do they call themselves? Four think tanks went into gear and one guy said 'Hey what about Purple Rings?' Regal what? And Purple Rings it was. Unusual you might say but it was the lucky charm for the foursome, who are committed to do something good to satisfy their souls since all of them are quite talented. Auditions followed and now they are centre stage. Come October 1 Purple Rings, under the umbrella of Sudu of Ultimate will be performing at the lobby of the Hilton Hotel frequently on Fridays and Saturdays. But before that they bagged a gig at the Colombo Swimming Club next Friday (24) and are eagerly awaiting the night! Speaking to the gravel voice Fabion Bonnie Paul vocalist and 'band manager' it was obvious he is a fan of Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams and Michael Bolton. "Yes we do covers but I do it my way" insists Fabion who carries the load of the vocals ably assisted by the lead guitarist Lakmal Fernando whose fretwork is quite remarkable and this coupled with his 'balladish' voice is bound to help the band go places. With no acoustic drums but a drum machine the sound of 'Purple Rings' is catchy and different. With the versatile Muditha on keyboards and Chamara Pieris plucking bass, the band is all set to hit the night spots and how! - Mahes Perera |
