Schoolchildren should not be book-worms: PM Rohan Mathes reporting from Anuradhapura Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse urged the schoolchildren not to be 'book-worms', confined only to the books, but to indulge in extra-curricular activities as well in school. He also urged the parents to encourage and motivate their children accordingly and not to lose their interest in their offsprings gradually, when they become older. The Premier made these observations on Friday at the Swarnapali Balika Maha Vidyalaya annual awards ceremony in Anuradhapura where he was the chief guest. Rajapakse pointed out that it was a misconception to assume that the University was the only way out when there were so many alternative avenues to further ones tertiary education in various spheres such as vocational training. He said that the time had evolved for all the student community to possess IT literacy which had cut across all spheres of employment. "We have to inculcate IT and TV technology to our education. Unfortunately even 5 per cent of the student population do not have access to this facility," he said. He said to overcome this, he would soon make plans to provide IT at 'village temple level' to the rural community via his office. "We will also introduce IT as a school subject at Ordinary and Advanced Level," he added. |
