Third tennis title for Oshada in a week by Lal Gunasekera Sri Lanka's Oshada Wijemanne bagged yet another title - the third within a week, when he won the Boy's Doubles title partnered again by Franklyn Emmanuel in the second International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior (Under-18) International Championships conducted by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath yesterday. Wijemanne and Emmanuel beat the Thai combination of Parakiat Siriveckai Wattana and Kittiphong Wachiramanowong in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to take the doubles title. However, the Boy's Singles title went to Chinese Taipei's Hsin-Han Lee who took Sri Lanka's Amrith Rupasinghe into three sets before winning at 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Australia's Lia Tapper won the Girl's Singles title beating Preethi Subramaniam of India in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, while achieving a double by winning the Doubles too with Jesicca Moors beating the Chinese Taipei pair of Jing-Chi Ling and Su-Han Yang also in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Last week, Sri Lanka's Oshada Wijemanne did exceptionally well to win both the Boy's Singles and Doubles titles at the first ITF Junior International. Wijemanne, the 16-year-old student of Stafford International school, beat second seeded Hsin-Han Lee of Chinese Taipei in the Singles final in a 90 minute three setter 6-1, 1-6, 6-0, while combining with Franklyn Emmanuel won the Doubles title beating another Taipei pair of Hsin-Han Lee and Yae-Cheng Wang also in a three setter 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. India's Preethi Subramaniam won the Girl's Singles title beating Lia Tapper of Australia in a three setter 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, while the Girl's Doubles title went to Chinese Taipei's Hsu and Yang who beat Lin and Wang also of Taipei again in a three setter 1-6, 6-0, 7-5. Wijemanne is the third Sri Lankan player to win an ITF Junior title in recent years with Amrith Rupasinghe triumphing two years ago (2002) in Colombo, while Harshana Godamanne won at Islamabad, Pakistan the same year. There were 23 entries from overseas namely Chinese Taipei, Thailand, South Korea, India, Maldive Islands, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. |
