SLAQ hold APOQ international confab in Colombo The Sri Lanka Association for Quality (SLAQ) set up 10 years ago is a core council member of the Asia Pacific Organisation for Quality (APOQ) and plans to hold the international conference of APOQ in 2006 in Colombo. The 4th national convention on quality, organised by the Sri Lanka Association for Quality (SLAQ) concluded last week. The theme of the Convention was `Quality its Way of Life' and was focused on enhancing competitiveness through quality and continuous improvement in the 21st century. The conference was also intended to facilitate world trade and globalisation and also take up issues encompassing international development of quality, environment, safety and health. SLAQ, begun ten years ago, now plays an important role in influencing quality management policies at national level, SLAQ President Dr Srilal de Silva said. One of the main steps in this direction was the establishment of ISO 9000 forum to counter many malpractices noted in certification activities of the management systems (ISO 9000,ISO14000, ISO22000 - HACCP etc). SLAQ considers this a strong move to prevent the industries and services in Sri Lanka becoming internationally non-competitive due to increased cost and minor gains from the implementation of such systems. SLAQ has developed a close relationship with the business community and has a membership of 150 with projections of increasing it to 500 by 2006. SLAQ is now affiliated to the Institute of Quality Assurance (IQA) in UK. Through this affiliation SLAQ will conduct IQA diploma courses in Sri Lanka. SLAQ is a sustaining member of the American Society of Quality (ASQ) and conducts ASQ examinations on a regular basis. |
