Talented and terrific

by Mahes Perera

Just sixteen but with a musical maturity that's amazing is the multi-instrumentalist and vocalist ' who left for Seaford College, UK to further her academic career. But she'll be back soon she assures us to stage her debut solo concert in November. A member of the newly formed 'Brass Monkey', Swinly plays keyboards/piano and is responsible for the vocals in the group which leans on alternative music and jazz originals; and was a finalist in the recent TNL On Stage competition.

"We performed three of our songs 'Sin', 'Morning Star' and 'Tumbleweed' enthuses Swinly who hails from a musical family, her father the famous Director of the Police Band, Lancelot Perera and her mother Swee who runs a school of music.

Quite naturally the classical music foundation is a firm asset in Swinly who is a violinist in the Colombo Symphony Orchestra, and is following formal study in piano, violin and singing. She is as equally fluent in playing the flute and the guitar.

The home is the base they say for absorbing music vibes but in the case of Swinly she is somewhat confident that her beginnings were not only at home. "As a child I was open to all kinds of music while travelling in the car, which was quite often, and sitting in the back seat your imagination turns into rhythmic creativity. I had my fair share of listening to music at home and ever since I was just five years old I've been in the music scene and was accustomed to the stage," clues Swinly for whom the words 'stage fright' are tipexed from her dictionary.

Last year this young composer multi-instrumentalist while still in school recorded a surprise CD containing eighteen tracks for her mother, with the help of her father, just to hear her mother say "very good" to her. Swinly donated her self titled CDs to her school Bishops College and the proceeds from the sale went towards the school fund. Watching Swinly play the piano, violin or singing with the orchestra 'Friends in Harmony' you are struck by her natural confidence and her ability and enthusiasm to fit in with ease into any rhythm - classical, pop, swing or jazz. "Pop music is changing all the time.

I think songs should have a meaning in lyrics and the tunes should be melodic. In rap and rock I find the lyrics meaningless but I respect it as a form of music. Gershwin is my favourite composer and I'm familiar and enjoy playing the standards of that era" expresses Swinly a young phenomenon in music. Watch out for her solo concert in November!
