Public servants promised land by Rohan Mathes Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama promised to grant a piece of land to all public sector employees, at a cost of around Rs. 750,000. Speaking at an informal get-together to discuss matters pertaining to the rising cost of living and other matters with the government trade union leaders at his ministry last Monday, Minister Amunugama asserted that in addition to gifting a block of land, he would also arrange the necessary funds for the construction of the houses at concessionary rates. He also pledged to build a conducive environment in which all public sector employees would be able to perform an efficient and productive service. Amunugama reiterated that the envisaged pay hike to government servants at the forthcoming budget would be made taking into consideration the present rising costs of living. He further noted that he would promptly fill all vacancies which have not been filled for years in the past. Overseas training and scholarships which were confined earlier only to the higher level staff, would now be open to the lower grade staff as well, regardless of their service status. "A system would be formulated to select personnel for overseas training and scholarships, based strictly on their qualifications and capabilities", Amunugama added. At the meeting, the minister agreed to the demands put forward by the trade unions, to re-establish the 'Debt Conciliation Board' and to appoint an 'Arbitration Committee' in order to resolve problems of trade unions. |
