PM lauds Chinese help

by Ananda Kannangara

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse recently highlighted the invaluable service rendered by the People's Republic of China for the development of our economy as well as culture in many ways during the past few decades.

He said the Chinese Government not only promoted our culture and economy but also gifted the Bandaranaike International Conference Hall and the Superior Courts Complex.

The Premier made these observations at a ceremony held in Colombo to coincide with the 55th National Day of the People's Republic of China. Ambassador of the People's Republic of China, Sun Guoxiang was the guest of honour at the ceremony, organised by the Association for Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Cooperation (ASLCSCC).

Rajapakse also reminded that a fully equipped cultural centre will also be constructed shortly with the assistance of the Chinese Government.

"The diplomatic ties commenced between our countries during the regime of former Prime Minister Late Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike immensely helped to cherish the long-standing friendship and also to expand trade activities.

Labour Relations and Foreign Employment Minister Athauda Seneviratne made the commemorative speech, while Southern Province Governor Kingsley T. Wickremeratna was also present.
