A China-Japan final by Ranjan Anandappa Defending champions and six times title holders China will confront four times winners of the title in the 12th Asian Volleyball Women's Junior Championships final at the Sugathadasa Stadium today. China beat Korea in the first semi final in straight sets 26-24, 25-20, 25 17 while Japan also defeated Chinese Taipea in straight sets 25-21, 25-20, 25-17. None of the semi-finals lasted the length of five sets although the competition was quite stiff. China's senior spikers won the gold medal at the recently concluded Athens Olympics and their juniors gave a fine display with their height advantage to beat their opponents Korea. In the second semi-final between Japan and Chinese Taipei, the Japanese were made to fight hard in the first set which the Japanese won 25-21, who went on to win the remaining two sets easily giving a pleasing display. In today's final, Japan has a slight psychological edge as they defeated the Chinese in a group match 21-25, 25-23, 25-17,25-15 in one of the four matches which lasted four sets. China won the first set 25-21 but went down in the other three sets. Sri Lanka lost to India 16-25, 8-25, 16-25 and was placed eight while Thailand, Australia and India were placed 5th, 6th and 7th. The consolation final between Korea and Chinese Taipei will take place at 2 p.m. and the final between China and Japan will be worked out at 5 p.m. |
