Indians Yuki and Sweta Asian u-14 champs by LAL GUNASEKERA Two Indians - Yuki Bhambri and Sweta Solanki, won the Boys' and Girls' Singles titles respectively at the Colombo leg of the Asian Under-14 Tennis Championships conducted by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) Greenpath yesterday. Bhambri beat fellow Indian Sameer Paranjape in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to win the Boys' Singles title, while Sweta Solanki also of India, beat Sri Lanka's Jithmi Jayawickreme in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to win the Girls' Singles title. In the semi-finals of the Boys' Singles, Bhambri beat Mansingh Artha also of India 7-5, 6-3, while Paranjape beat yet another Indian Christopher Marquis 7-5, 6-3. Sweta Solanki won her Girls' Singles semi-final beating Prerane Appineni also of India in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, while in the other Semi Jithmi Jayawickreme beat fellow Lankan Dinali de Silva comfortably in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. The Asian Under-14 series is by Australian Open with the other tournament in South Asia to be staged in New Delhi, India from October 19 to 24. The other six tournaments in the Asian region are to be held in Uzbekistan, Qatar, Philippines, Thailand, China and South Korea. The winners of all singles events at each venue (totalling eight boys and eight girls) will be flown to Australia by Australia Open to play in the Grand Final of Asia Under-14 Series, play in the Australian Junior National Championships and also get the opportunity of witnessing the Australian Open at Melbourne in January next year (2005). It was a poor response for the Colombo leg with entries coming from only India, Maldives and Sri Lanka while Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan failed to compete. |
