Ten nations at World Carrom C'ships Oct 5 to 9 by LESLIE FERNANDO Slicers from ten countries will participate at the 4th World Carrom Championships hosted by the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka to be held from october 5 to 9 at the Grand Oriental Hotel, Colombo. The championship is sponsored by National Savings Bank and the co-sponsor is Finance and Guarantee Ltd. International Carrom Federation has given its blessings to hold the championships. Besides Sri Lanka, the nine other countries United Kingdom, Italy, India, Maldives, Germany, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Korea and Japan have confirmed participation according to Mrs. Rohini Mathiasz, Secretary, Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL). The championship will be for men and women and the events to be worked off are Men's team championship, Women's team championship, Men's singles, Men's doubles, Women's singles and Women's doubles. The overall champions will be presented with the National Savings Bank Challenge Trophies. The Indian carromites, both men and women have performed well at the last three World Championships, coming out winners in 1991 in New Delhi, 1996 in Colombo and in 1999 in New Delhi again. Sri Lanka were runners-up in all previous championships. Mrs. Mathiasz added that the opening ceremony will take place at GOH on October 5 at 9.30 a.m. and the CFSL has invited Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Jeevan Kumaranatunga to grace the occasion. Closing ceremony will be on October 9 at 6.00 p.m. at the Fingara Town and Country Club, Rattanapitiya. Matches are scheduled to commence at 9.00 a.m. each day and will continue till 6.30 p.m. except on the day of the opening ceremony when the championship will commence at 1.00 p.m. Sri Lanka Carrom team (men) - Chamal Cooray (Carromites SC), Nishantha Fernando (Finance and Guarantee Ltd), Ajith Chandrasoma (Ceylon Petroleum Corporation), Viraj Fernando (Sri Lanka Ports Authority), Tharanga Kalum (Old Mazenodian SC).
