Success for Mahesha in tennis The Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) junior programme has improved in leaps and bounds with several juniors (both boys and girls) faring exceptionally well in local tournaments as well as overseas. One of these players is 18-year-old Mahesha Seneviratne of Bishop's College. Introduced to the racquet sport when she was only eight years of age, Mahesha, has gradually climbed the ladder of success. She has tasted success in various age groups in local tournaments (under-10, 12, 14, 16 and 18) including the Junior and Senior National Championships. Mahesha has also done very well at ITF Junior International tournaments and has also represented the country at the Federation Cup in 2001 in Chinese Taipei and in various other overseas tournaments in India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand, Pakistan and South Korea and since 1997, she has played in 17 such tournaments. She is also an athlete of repute (in both track and field events) and has been awarded over 25 awards whilst at Bishop's College in these two sports. Mahesha is the daughter of P. Seneviratne, who is a Sub-Inspector of Police and Mallika and has two elder brothers. L.G. |
