Income soars at Laksala by Chanuka Mannapperuma 'Laksala', the leading handicrafts sales house owned by the Government has recorded an income of Rs. 18 million during the month of August, the highest income earned during its 40 year history. Over the years, Laksala has greatly extended assistance to the people whose main livelihood is producing handicraft products. Another unique feature of this year's achievement is that Laksala as the main sales institute for country's handicrafts industry has paid a sum of Rs 60 million to those engaged in the sector over the nine months. At present, there are a large number of people who depend on supplying traditional items to the Laksala. " These people are the 'creators of nation' and so we must extend them due assistance and incentives," said Deputy Minister Rural Industrial Development, Sunil Hadunneththi. Laksala has organised a number of programs to commemorate its 40th anniversary "A 10 percent discount will be given to all items at the Laksala," Deputy Minister said. Besides that a blood donation campaign, religious ceremonies, felicitation to staffers, launch of books and trade fairs (at Thunmulla show room) will take place. According to Deputy Minister,the ministry has already setup a Laksala showroom in Australia and arrangements are being made to open another showroom in Japan. Laksala Chairman, S.A.D.Sumanasiri, said Laksala is one of the main marketing houses in the country which earns foreign exchange to the country. He said Laksala had exceeded its profit targets, this year. |
