SLMC's counter to ISGA ready soon by Rashomi Silva Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) is on the verge of finalising their counter proposals to the LTTE's Interim Self Governing Authority (ISGA) proposals, a top party member said yesterday. Congress leader Rauff Hakeem said the proposals were aimed at gaining self autonomy for the Muslim community in the North-East during the interim phase. "The unwavering stance of the LTTE is to establish an interim administration before going for a final settlement, accordingly we prepared our proposals to gain self autonomy for members of our community living in the areas coming under interim rule," he said. Meanwhile the Forum of Muslim parliamentarians will be meeting again today to urge the government to send a separate Muslim delegation at future talks, a spokesperson for the delegation said. Hakeem said the SLMC would continue to participate in the forum despite the crossing over of some of its members to the government, to ensure a separate stakeholder status for the community. "We have our community interest at heart and we would continue to make our presence at the forum to ensure we get a separate delegation at future talks," he said. Referring to the proposed Constituent Assembly (CA) he said his party 'vehemently opposes the establishment of such an assembly and said they would mobilise people against any move to change the constitution through a CA. Changing the constitution through a Constituent Assembly would make the country's constitution a temporary document, enabling every government with a simple majority to change the constitution at their will, he observed. "This will also give the LTTE an opportunity to secession via a Constituent Assembly," he said. |
