Slimline boxers dominate 79th nationals by Leslie Fernando The Slimline SC pugilists underlined their supremacy to carry away major honours at the four-day 79th Boxing National Championships held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium ring yesterday. Champions Slimline SC retained the overall title collecting 35 points to lift the Muttiah Zavier Roches Cup for being the most successful boxing club of the year. Of the 11 bouts worked off Slimline SC boxers won the Welter Weight under 69.0 kgs light weight under 57-0 kgs, bantam weight under 54.0 kgs and fly weight under 51.0 kgs. Their boxers performances were remarkable and their crisp punching, sharp tactical sense and speed around the ring proved too strong for their opponents. The best bout of the day was in the welter weight under 64.0 kgs. with S. I. Kumara of Slimline SC fighting a good bout. He fought a good first round but then changed the tactics in the other two rounds against W. M. T. Ratnayake of Sri Lanka Police. Kumara was fast and a technical boxer, always moving around the ring with great hand speed and amaster at edging blows. He dodged blows or else tried to soften his opponent with his shoulders. K. A. C. N. Alexander representing Unichella, was selected as the 'Most Scientific Boxer' and was awarded the Sir Henry Manning Trophy. T. S. Harsha Kumara of Slimline SC was the 'Best Loser' of the meet. Kishu Gomes, Chief Executive Officer, Caltex Lubricant Ltd. was the Chief Guest. |
