High jumper Kumara to train in Los Angeles Sri Lanka's ace high jumper W. P. Manjula Kumara the National and South Asian Federation (SAF) Games record holder, who represented the country at the Athens Olympics, has been awarded a scholarship by South California University in Los Angeles, USA. A former champion high jumper Nagalingam Ethiraveerasingham, has also assisted Kumara in obtaining the scholarship and his assistance for training and educational activities over there will be a great boost for Kumara. Kumara will train under an American qualified coach who has coached several Olympic athletes, in view of the 2005 South Asian Games in Colombo 2005. Kumara, who has gone over the bar upto 2-27 metres from 2.10 metres, is also scheduled to compete at the 2006 Asian Games and 2008 Olympic Games. Kumara is one of our main medal prospect for future international meets. Jeevan Kumaranatunga, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports has decided to provide Kumara all requirements including coaches fees and travelling expenses, internal travel expenses, sports clothes, vitamins, medical facilities in USA. Kumara will receive his sponsorship package from the Minister tomorrow (Monday) at Bauddhaloka Mawatha at 2.30 p.m. (L.F.) |
