Jaffna College celebrates two centennials Jaffna College, Vaddukoddai, celebrates four important anniversaries this year, namely the 125th Anniversary of Jaffna College Alumni Association (Parent Association), the 125th anniversary of the publication of the college magazine, Miscellany, and the 100th birth anniversary of two of the college's most loved by former leaders, Dr. Sydney K. Bunker and Mr. K.A. Selliah. There were formal and informal events organised by the Jaffna College Alumni in Toronto, Canada, on October 29 and 30. The chief guest was Jaffna College alumnus Dr. E. Valentine Daniel, Professor of Anthropology, Columbia University, New York, who delivered a lecture on Tamil Diaspora: Questions of Identity. At home in Sri Lanka, Jaffna College commemorates its leaders Dr. Sydney K. Bunker and Mr. K. A. Selliah at a service of thanksgiving at the Cathedral Church of the Jaffna diocese of the Church of South India on November 20, at 3.30 p.m. The service is organised by the daughters of Dr. Bunker and Mr. Selliah in thanksgiving for the lives of these two men who worked together, leading Jaffna College through its golden years of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Dr. S. K. Bunker was an American missionary who devoted 29 years of his life to the service of Jaffna College, as Principal from 1937 to 1947, and then as the President of the college when the Undergraduate Department was added in 1947 until his retirement in 1966. Mr. K. A. Selliah was Vice Principal during Dr. Bunker's Principalship and became its first national principal in 1947 until he also retired in 1966. It was a partnership of 29 years and it is fitting that the community should celebrate their lives together. Dr. C. V. Selliah, daughter of Mr. K.A. Selliah, is now Principal of Uduvil Girls' College and Ms Grace Bunker, following in the footsteps of her father, is a missionary serving at both Uduvil Girls College and Jaffna College. They welcome all who wish to participate the service of thanksgiving to be held on November 20. A large number of people from the community are expected to gather at the service of thanksgiving in Vaddukoddai and to attend the tea provided by Jaffna College in Ottley Hall that will follow the service. |
