National parley on electoral law reforms by Rohan Mathes A National Convention on Electoral Law Reforms which would represent the views of all the major political parties of the country, will be held at the Savsiripaya today at 9.00 am, PAFFREL Chief, Kingsly Rodrigo, said. Kinsly Rodrigo told the "Sunday Observer" that the relevant reforms required for the conduct of a fair and free election would be discussed at length at this convention. "We have had seminars represented by the civil society in 24 districts and proposals already submitted by them, would be presented to the politicians at this meeting", he said. Proposals such as the mandatory requirement of the National Identity Card at elections and, an increase of women representation at local government institutions which had already been approved, and certain other issues such as the anticipated constitutional changes, a sustainable final solution for the ethnic crisis, election laws applicable to the North and East and the intricacies of the proportionate and 'first past the post' system were among others which would figure at the discussion. The UPFA General Secretary and Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha will represent the Alliance while the UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya, Nandana Gunatilake, T. Sambandan, Rauf Hakeem and Douglas Devananda will represent the UNP, JVP, TNA, SLMC and the EPDP respectively. Minister Dinesh Goonewardena will be attending as the Chairman of the former Parliamentary Select Committee, Rodrigo said. |
