UNP warns of civil disobedience

Tamil Press by S. Selvakumar

The LTTE claimed that there was no response from the Government to their call to inform them whether all UPFA partners were united in their stand to talk peace based on the ISGA proposals and the President's intimation to the Tigers to inform her of their stand before the end of November were highlighted in the Tamil dailies. The papers also speculated on the Budget proposals until Budget day.

A Hindu priest was run over and killed by an Army bowser. As a result tension was high in Kodikaman in Jaffna, the Thinakaran said on Monday. The paper added that following this incident Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission officials and TNA parliamentarians intervened and brought the situation under control. In another front page story the paper said the LTTE would keep under wraps their intimation to the government on the resumption of peace talks sent through the Norwegian Foreign Minister until the President's response on the issue.

UPFA's policy

However, the Sudaroli said Tigers had informed President Kumaratunga through Norway that they would like to know the UPFA's policy on the recommencement of peace talks and not just the President's stand since the government comprises various political parties and added the President was yet to respond.

The paper quoted JVP Minister K. D. Lalkanth and said all JVP ministers would resign their portfolios if the government talks peace based on the LTTE's ISGA proposals. The UNP warned that it would rally the masses and resort to civil disobedience if the President extends her term after December 2005.

Interim authority

The Thinakkural quoted a website and said top EPDP members including former Jaffna District MP V. K. Jegan, Editor of the EPDP weekly paper Baskaran and former Jaffna leader Nisandan escaped to foreign countries.

The paper in another story said President Kumaratunga had informed the LTTE through Norway that she would talk peace only on the basis of an interim authority and not on the Interim Self Governing Authority.

The Thinakaran on Tuesday quoted JVP Tamil Parliamentarian R. Chandrasekeran and said the government had accepted many of the JVP proposals in the forthcoming Budget and this was a victory of the poor masses.

The Thinakkural quoted a Foreign Ministry official and said handbills have been distributed in all major cities in Iraq urging the abductors of Sri Lankan truck driver Dinesh Rajaratnam be released.

The Sudaroli quoted Minister Anura Bandaranaike and said the government was ready for peace as well as war with the LTTE.

The Virakesari in its lead story said the President would not like to extend her office for a third term and quoted her speck made at the BMICH on Sunday.

Illegal firearms

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe would like to cooperate with the President to take forward the peace process but it was the responsibility of the government to mend ways with the JVP, according to the Sudaroli on Wednesday. The amnesty granted to surrender illegal firearms before November 30 was extended till December 31, the paper said in a front page story.

The Constitutional Council would meet on November 22 to decide on the new members to be appointed to the Bribery and Corruption Commission. The term of the present three commissioners ends on December 14.

The TNA would send an official request to New Delhi soon urging India to abandon the proposed Indo-Lanka Defence Pact according to the Thinakkural Women's organisations in Trincomalee handed over birthday greetings to LTTE political office to be sent to Prabhakaran whose birthday falls on Nov. 26.

The Thinakaran had the same story as its lead and in another front page story said the government had refused a request to effect a price hike on petroleum, gas and milk foods. SLMM chief Major General Trond Furhovde met with Jaffna Commander Major Gen. Sunil Tennakoon and discussed several issues including the controversial Nagarkovil area where the FDL's of both the Army and the LTTE are located. The Thinakaran reported a meeting between Furuhovde and Tamilselvan on Wednesday.

UMU Party

The Thinakaran said UNP Digamadulla National List MP Myown Mustapha would resign his Parliamentary seat after the Budget to form his own political party named as United Muslim Umma Party.

A fifteen year of Tamil boy from Vavuniya was arrested by the Navy when he attempted to enter the Sri Lanka Port premises from the Hingurukade junction, the Sudaroli reported.

However the Sudaroli said in a front page story about the LTTE's Heroes Day celebrations to be held in Essex, UK, on November 27. Over 10,000 UK based Tamils would attend the celebrations, the paper added.
