Tour de Lanka dates and route finalised The Tour de Lanka 2004 will be held this year six days from December 7 to 12, covering a distance of 921.5 kms. On December 5 the prologue time trial will be held starting at 8.45 a.m. from Panadura to Moratuwa - distance 5 km. The prologue time trial is an international rule approved by the Union Cyclists International (UCI) and this will determine the position of each cyclist for the starting list on the opening day. The winner of the prologue time trial will wear the "yellow jersey" and the overall leader after each stage will follow same. The first stage on December 5 - Prologue time trial. December 6 - Rest Day. December 7 - 2nd stage: Starting opposite Lake House at 7.00 a.m. to Dambulla (172 km) and Dambulla to Anuradhapura (68 km). Third stage: On December 8 from Anuradhapura to Trincomalee (147 km). Fourth stage: On December 9 from Trincomalee to Kantale (43 km) and Kantale to Kandy (141 km). Fifth stage: On December 10, the riders will participate 57.5 km circuit race around the Kandy Lake (25 rounds). December 11, Sixth stage: From Kandy to Ratnapura (128 km) and the riders will be brought back to Colombo (transport provided) and will ride in the final stage on December 12 at 7.00 a.m. start opposite Lake House to finish at Matara via Horana, Kalutara and Galle. According to Sanjaya Muttiah, co-ordinator of Tour-de-Lanka, foreign riders from Holland, Mongolia and Hong Kong have confirmed their participation. 12 riders will also be eligible for special trophies and cash awards. The overall winner of the Tour de Lanka will receive rupees one lakh, runner-up Rs. 75,000, third place Rs. 50,000, fourth 40,000, fifth 30,000, sixth 25,000, seventh 20,000, eighth 15,000, ninth 12,000, tenth 10,000, 11th to 15th positions 5,000 each, 16th to 25th place: 3,000 each. (Total Rs. 432,000). The stage winners prize money first (10,000), second (7,500), third (5,000), fourth (3,000), fifth (2,000), sixth (1,000). The prize money will be for all six stages (Total Rs. 199,500). Cash prizes for spring - first (15,000), second (10,000), third (7,500), fourth (5,000), fifth (2,500). Hill climb - first (10,000), second (5,000), third (2,500) - Total (Rs. 57,500). The prize money for Nilwala Savariya Standard Men's Race and Ladies Standard Race is as follows: first (20,000), second (15,000), third (10,000), fourth (7,500), fifth (5,000), sixth (4,000), seventh (3,000), eighth to tenth (2,000 each), eleventh to twentieth (1,000 each) - Total Rs. 161,000). Entries for the racing event will close on December 2 while Standard Race for men and women will close on December 10. L.F |
