6 foot 10 inch Dharshani a boost to Lankan team

by Leslie Fernando

The tallest player in Sri Lanka netball Dharshani Sivalingam (6 feet 10 inches) from Eastern University, Batticaloa is in the 15-member 'pool' in preparation for the Asian Netball Championships in Singapore in January 2005.

The 'pool' was pruned down from the 25 players originally picked. The national selectors - Ms. Seeta Wickremasinghe, Kumuduni Gomez, Jayanthi Somasekeran de Silva, Thisanganee Shanmuganathan, Rohini Perera, Priyanka Peiris and Muthulakshimi Hegoda picked the 15 players on November 14 at the final trial held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

Dharshani Sivalingam born in Jaffna was spotted by netball officials during the Inter-District Netball Tournament held in Vavuniya on October 23-24. She was included to the 25 member pool and was training under national coach Lourdes Jayasekera. Ms. Yasmin Dharmaratne, the Secretary Netball Federation of Sri Lanka said that it is a great advantage in having a tall player in the side. Dharshani is being trained to be a good 'goal shoot' and she has shown great progress.

Meanwhile the 'ace' goal shoot Gishanthi Jayakody, the captain of the Junior Asian Netball Championship team is not included to the pool due to a knee injury. Jayakody who played a grand game for Sri Lanka in the final of the Senior Asian Netball Championships held in 2002 and helped to beat Singapore with her sharp and accurate shooting, will also be included to the 'pool' once she recovers. The poolists will undergo training under Lourdes Jayasekera and her deputy Padma Gunawardana until end of December after which the final 12 players will be named. The 15 member pool: Dharshani Sivalingam, Sanduni Bollegala, Vishaka Jayasuriya, Dhamayanthi Jayatilaka, A. M. S. Chyamali, Shereen Nugera, Sujani Dilrukshi, Manoji Preethika, W. M. N. M. Dilrukshi, Arunika Udayani, Niroshani Samudrika, Gayathri Lankathilaka, Rattna Victoria, A. P. K. Manojika, Shashika Samarasinghe.

Netball Nationals

The Netball Federation of Sri Lanka have made all arrangements to hold the National Championships in Hambantota for the first time on December 18 and 19. Thirty two teams from different districts and associations are expected to participate.

Last year, Hatton National Bank, representing the Mercantile Netball Association, emerged champions while Keep Fit team from Colombo District Netball Association were runners-up.
