'Pro' Lalith Kumara finds travelling too strenuous in India Lalith Kumara, who turned professional only recently after winning the amateur titles of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, has pulled out of the remaining tournaments of the Indian Professional Golfers Association (IPGA) Tour scheduled for this year after playing in only four tournaments. A spokesman for the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) told the Sunday Observer that Lalith Kumara had found it too strenuous to travel round India by train and had also cited "personal reasons". In the four tournaments on the IPGA Tour, Lalith Kumara, was 32nd at the Amby Valley MGC Open in Chennai, joint 44th at the Hyundai TNGF Open also in Chennai, 21st at the Hero Honda Open in Bangalore and 40th at the HT Pro Golf Championship. He was scheduled to figure in two more tournaments this month - Tata Open in Jamshedpur and Servo Masters at the Digby Golf Club course in Assam. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's other professional, K. A. Anura Rohana, has returned to the country after playing in three ournaments on the Asian Professional Golfers Association (APGA) Tour. He was joint fifth at the US Dollars 250,000 Sanya Open in China with an aggregate 273 (73, 69, 63, 68) and equalling the course record with a third-round 63 with nine birdies. He was joint 20th at the US Dollars 200,000 Crown Plaza Open in Shanghai, China with an aggregate 290 (71, 75, 73, 71) but did not fare too well at the Carlsberg Masters in Vietnam where he finished 48th with an aggregate 298 (76, 73, 75, 74). Rohana is now scheduled to play in the Volvo Open in China later this month, as well as in the Hong Kong Open and another tournament in Japan (both in December), but the APGA has yet to confirm his participation. Earlier, Rohana, was 8th at the Tianjin Open in China on the APGA Tour, while on the IPGA Tour, he was ninth at the Amby Valley MGC Open in Chennai and joint 17th at the Hyundai TNGF Open in Chennai. He will continue on the IPGA Tour next year (2005). L. G. |
