Women proficient in many fields from SAARC countries gathered at
the Galle-Face Hotel, Colombo for a 'Wedding Splendour' that
showcased many, unique and enduring customs and rituals of the
region.
The event was presented by the SAARC Women's Association, Sri
Lanka Chapter with Mrs. Feriel Ashraff, Minister of Housing,
Construction Development, Education and Irrigation Development in
the Eastern Province as the chief guest.
Proceeds were in aid of the welfare of women prisoners' and the
children born in prison premises at Welikada.
Ashraff in her brief speech appealed to Women's Associations in
SAARC countries and local participants, especially those in
handicrafts and handloom industries to help out the women prisoners
once they get out of prison.
She also stressed that it could be done by giving them a training
in handicrafts and then helping them to develop it by assisting and
finding the market for their products.
Tasneem Jafferjee, President of the SAARC Women's Association of
Sri Lanka Chapter addressing the audience said that the proceeds of
'Wedding Splendour' would go towards improving the facilities at the
female ward of the Welikada prison. "We hope to provide them
with tube wells to ensure adequate water supply, storage facilities
for their personal use and also medical supplies and instruments for
their medical clinic.
The highlight of the morning was the colourful attires worn by
charming brides. India presented almost the full wedding ceremony
while Pakistan and Nepal presented colourful episodes of their
customs.
Bhutan, Maldives and Bangladesh weddings were also captivating.
Sri Lanka presented Sinhala, Malay and Hindu wedding customs.
Malay and Hindu weddings were romantic and colourful but one felt
little bit of glamour and romanticism should have also been added to
the Sinhala wedding.
