Naufer's diary full of top cops' numbers by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The National Police Commission (NCP) plans to take tough disciplinary action against police officers if found that they were on the payroll of drug king pin Mohamed Naufer alias "Kudu Naufer" who had allegedly contracted the killing of Colombo High Court Judge Sarath Ambepitiya. The NCP Chairman, Ranjith Abeysuriya told the Sunday Observer that the NCP has no option but to deal severely with such officers if the allegations were proved. Officials of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) had stumbled over a diary belonging to Naufer during the raid on his house. He had jotted some telephone numbers of senior Police officers. When CCD Director Sarath Lugoda had interrogated Naufer as to why he had noted down the telephone numbers of senior Police officers, Naufer had told Lugoda that his life was in danger from rival gangs and telephone numbers were noted to inform those officers in case of an emergency, CCD sources said. However, the Police was conducting a separate investigation to ascertain whether those police officers really benefited from Naufer. The NCP last week took action to interdict six Police officers who had reportedly tortured Gerald Mervyn Perera of Wattala. They have been suspected of involvement in the killing of Perera last week. |
