Appreciation: Rohan Rajapakse a great promoter of tennis Rohan Rajapakse was a great promoter of tennis, though making a name for himself in the family's optical business started by his late father Eric, who too was involved in the sport and the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA). Rohan passed away recently and his cremation took place last Tuesday according to the wishes of his family. An old Thurstanite, Rohan, was a much loved personality, and was responsible for not only starting tennis at his alma mater, but also reviving it after it has gradually come to an end. He was responsible for "doing up" the two courts that Thurstan possessed in their premises and also started the Thurstan vs Isipatana series a few years back. He was also instrumental in conducting junior tournaments at the SLTA which were sponsored by his establishment (Eric Rajapakse Opticians) and was even responsible in the CR & FC (better known in rugby) start an Open tournament with the blessings of the SLTA. His wife Yasmin was a national squash player of repute, while their son Rajiv is a Sri Lanka Davis Cup player. Rohan's sister Rani and one of his younger brothers, Tito, too were good tennis players, who won their Public Schools colours. Tito too was a Thurstanite. Rohan also had a daughter, Nadeera, and two other younger brothers Zola and Jehan.I extend my sympathies to the Rajapakse family. (L.G.). |
