Sri Lanka wins three World Star awards

Sri Lanka won three World Star awards for excellence in packaging, held in Mumbai, India last week, conducted by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) the world's apex body in packaging.

The winners came from six entries made to the WPO sessions held in Mumbai. The three winning entries came from, Euro Scan Exports Pvt Ltd (2 awards) and Standing Trading Company (one award).

Earlier, Sri Lanka won 12 Asia Star awards in Tokyo, conducted by the Asian Packaging Federation (APF). The winners were: Euro Scan Exports Pvt Ltd - 2 awards; Standard Trading - 2 awards; Mabroc Teas Pvt Ltd - 4 awards; Universal Packaging Pvt Ltd - 2 awards; Ma's Tropical Foods and FJ & I Printers, one award each.

Sri Lankan president of the APF Dharmatilake Ratnayake was advised to continue in office for an unprecedented third-year ending 2005, when the APF sessions was held in Tokyo last month.

Another Sri Lankan, Gamini Marambe, the APF Treasurer, along with its Secretary-General, Rajiv Dhar from India, were also re-elected for an extended third term. The 15-member APF consists of Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Russia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Sri Lanka.

Eighteen members of the Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging (SLIP) made up the Lankan delegation at the annual APF General Assembly in Tokyo.

Mabroc Teas received the highest marks at the Asia Stars contest for its entry, `Portable tea bag dispenser.'

Sri Lanka also won four of 12 Asia Star student category awards made out of 35 entries.

The winners were females students of packaging attached to the University of Moratuwa.

Dharmatilake Ratnayake is also the Vice president of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and with Gamini Marape and the (Sri Lanka) National Packaging Centre, Executive Director, J D Amarasooriya, participated at a WPO session, held in Mumbai, India, last week. Amarasooriya presented a paper on `The importance of Packaging Quality and reliability aspects for agro products.'

The first World Star Student category is likely to be conducted in Sri Lanka or India next year, on a proposal made by Ratnayake, prior to the next WPO sessions to be held in Brazil, in May 2005.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's packaging week will be held from 10 to 17th January 2005. The packaging week will end with a banquet when the Lanka Star, Asia Star and World Star winners will receive their awards.

It is also planned to train six Sri Lankans in packaging technology with emphasis on packaging of tea for export, in the Netherlands.

The programme is funded by the Ingrin Foundation in the Netherlands in association with the Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging.
