Special sound of Nalin by Mahes Perera Greet the New Year 2005 in the musical company of Nalin & The Star Combination when they perform at the Otters Aquatic Club on December 31.
The group has added the exciting sounds of the congas, played by the young Gayaham Weerakone. Nalin and the Star Combination have had a successful run of playing dates this season besides their regular weekly appearances on Tuesdays at the Galadari Hotel and on Thursdays at the Golden Mile, Mt. Lavinia. The fivesome with their special sound have given audiences many moments of musical happiness. "Our experience over the years and our wide repertoire of music has always been out asset" claims a proud Nalin. His guitar artistry and his strong vocals have kept him in the limelight in the music scene. Supported by the female glitz Shirmila Fonseka, daughter of the late C. D. Fonseka who handles vocals as well, Dilantha Silva, a veteran on the key boards, and Hiruske Fernando, a talented vocalist and guitarist the combination is gearing themselves to give you "the time of your life" this New Year's Eve. New mixes from Viran by Mahes Perera Ask, a DJ how exciting the needle-to-the vinyl world is, and he gets switched on. Popular DJ Viran is no exception.
Back home this year for the festive season to mix his special grooves at the Blue Elephant, Viran started off last week to make the dance groovers happy along with his fellow DJ's Naushad, Harith, Pradeep and Kapila. "The scene in London is progressive house, tribal and trance and I've brought down many tribal, house vinyls to spin every night. I want to introduce mixes of familiar music with new music - especially those of Missy Elliott - she's a hit. I've been influenced by house more than r&b and I think the vinyl culture commands respect in the world of DJs" says Viran when we met up with him on the day he arrived from London armed with a case of vinyls. Some of the tracks he will be introducing to our groovers will be Frequency from Sebastian and Hugo Ancello and The Fruit (Limited Edition) by Sander Klenienberg, both are progressive house tracks. There's Champion by Saeed and Palash a tribal mix, and Missy Elliott's My Neck My Back not forgetting a 2004 Tribal Mix of Hey Boy on the White Label Vinyl. Check out the music today, 'cos Viran will be off on January 3 after a hectic New Year's Eve at the Blue and at Trans Asia. He's got a lot of good records nobody else has. In London Viran is quite active DJing along with DJ Jan who formerly was spinning grooves at Colombo 2000. He handles private gigs like parties and dances and his schedule is full up with work. The popular Latin funk and hip-hop band Phase 3 is all set to dance you off your feet when they swing into throbbing action on New Year's Eve at the Blue Waters, Wadduwa. Playing weekly at the "Echelon Pub", Hilton Colombo you can enjoy their fascinating sounds on Christmas Eve at the Pub and if you are on holiday this season then experience their sounds at the Triton - Ahungalla on December 29. Phase 3 is scheduled to make a name change in the new year and in all probability reveal the new name after the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. The group is led by percussionist Rasmar Lye and comprises Debbie Arnolda - vocals and keyboards, Trevin Joseph - vocals, Reza Faiz - drums, Mangala Weerasekera - vocals and guitar and Iqbal Assan - vocals and bass. 'Til Dawn at the Mount by Mahes Perera Jetting in from Melbourne to spread the Australian cheer is the duo 'Til Dawn currently performing at the Aussie BBQ which commenced two days ago, and will go on till December 23 at the Terrace, Mount Lavinia Hotel from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. A husband and wife team Bryan and Dawn Patterson are one of Melbourne's premiere jazz duo with a muscial history of 30 years behind them. A prolific songwriter/composer, Bryan in his early years played with many high profile Australian and international artistes including Neil Sedaka and David Soul and has performed on major metropolitan television and radio stations. Dawn Patterson studied under the well-known and respected jazz teacher Joy Yates and is often compared to such luminaries as Peggy Lee and Julie London. Dawn's sultry jazz/blues style is fused with romance and beauty and is a real crowd pleaser.
