Christmas pandal in Wennappuwa

The first ever Christian Christmas 'Pandal' erected under the auspices of the Christian and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, will be opened by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse at a colorful ceremony to be held in Joseph Vaz Church premises Wennappuwa, on December 23 at 6 pm, a Spokesman for the Parliamentary and Christian Affairs Ministry said.

The 'Pandal' constructed to portray and depict the true Sri Lankan Christian culture and heritage, would resemble a traditional and illuminated Vesak Pandal. The art work would be done by Chandana of Chandana Art Works of Chilaw, under the supervision of the Parish Priest of Holy Family Church, Rajakadaluwa.

The Christian Affairs Ministry has announced that the national festivities of Christmas 2004 will be centered around the Chilaw diocese, with "Re-building of humaneness through the birth of Christ", as the theme declared this year. This will be followed by Sinhala Christian musical and drama which would be telecast live on National Rupavahini, on December 23.

The Pandal would be lit up on December 24 and 25 sans any other programme. However, there would be a musical fiesta comprising the winning groups of the 'Christian songs contest' of the district, on Sunday (26), commencing 7pm.

On Monday (27), there will be a Christmas musical under the direction of Father Anton Jayananda, followed by a Carol service of the Bolawatte parish youth on Tuesday (28).

The Wennappuwa parish youth will hold their Christmas carol service on Wednesday (29), all commencing at 7pm. The musical show 'Wey Prassansaa, directed by Brother Charles Thomas, under the theme 'Fly With Jesus', will be held on Thursday (30), commencing 7pm at the same venue, the spokesman further said.
