Taiwan's urges 'legal battle' against China TAIPEI, Saturday (AFP) Taiwan Vice President Annette Lu called for a "legal battle" Saturday against rival China which is considering a new law against seccession which analysts say is aimed at preventing Taipei from formally declaring independence. "Taiwan has never been and will never be part of the People's Republic of China (PRC). There is no so-called secession," Lu told reporters. Through its new law, China was "announcing to the world (its intention) to annex Taiwan by all means," she said. "We must launch a serious legal battle... and an international publicity war to let the world understand our situation." Taiwan split from mainland China in 1949 following civil war. But Beijing considers the island part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary, and has repeatedly threatened to invade should Taiwan formally declare independence. Lu's rebuke came one day after Xinhua news agency reported that Beijing's legislative leadership said a draft anti-secession law would be considered at its December 25 to 29 meeting. The report did not mention Taiwan but said the law was to promote reunification, a phrase used only to refer to the island. |
