Efforts needed to rebuild tourist industry The effects of the Tsunami with its origins in an earthquake have shocked not only us in Sri Lanka but our Asian neighbours and people across the world. Reports on the effects on the hotel establishments both big and small on the costal areas are devastating same as reports on damages to private homes and property. Coming at a time when our colleagues in the industry like us were trying to move into the future and the hope it holds for the whole industry is devastating. The toll this Tsunami unknown in our history of thousands of years has taken from our nation can only be horrifying and unbelievable as it is finally counted. We have decided to not give up hope but to go on and continue our efforts to make people believe in our country and its tourist potential. Through the jobs we can create in our small hotels planned across the country including on the coast will not be in great numbers. They will nevertheless create employment and income. We will endeavor to convince all our investors, partners, consultants and staff to go ahead with our plans to build 10 hotels over the next 3 years, with 2 or 3 completed in 2005. The resilience and courage of all our colleagues in the hotel and tourism industry both big and small needs recognition by us and all the support we can give.In this very dark hour we wish to reiterate our total commitment to the development of Sri Lanka and her tourism without any hesitation or reservation. |
