Pakistan's opposition rallies against Musharraf's army role ISLAMABAD, Saturday (AFP) Pakistan's opposition called for mass rallies Saturday to protest the decision by President Pervez Musharraf's not to quit as army chief as promised, accusing the general of undermining democracy. To mark what they term a "black day", Islamic parties and other groups planned to take to the streets after Musharraf told the nation in a television and radio address late Thursday that he would not hang up his uniform. He had earlier vowed to step down as head of the army by the end of 2004. The Islamist Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), former prime minister Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy all have announced joint demonstrations. MMA leader Maulana Fazalur Rehman, who backs Afghanistan's ousted fundamentalist Taliban movement, said the countrywide protests would be peaceful. The Islamists have already held four anti-Musharraf rallies over the past month. |
