UK's aid pledge tops 50 million pounds LONDON, Saturday (AFP) The British public has donated 50 million pounds (70.5 million euros, 96 million dollars) for victims of the Asian tsunami, with 18 million pounds raised during Friday alone, charity organisers said. The "phenomenal" response to Sunday's massive sea surges which killed more than 125,000 people saw huge numbers of calls to donate cash, according to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), an umbrella organisation for British charities. The organisation announced just before midnight that the landmark figure had been reached, matching the British government's own pledge of 50 million pounds. |
